Naoshima
Today was like something out of a fairytale. After having breakfast at our hotel we rushed to the train station because we thought we were about to miss the only train to the port that would take us to a ferry that would take us to Naoshima - our last stop in Japan.

Kyoto
We kicked off our time in Kyoto by walking through Nishiki Market, a walking-only open air market full of shops that were all offering Golden Week sales. We were immediately impressed by the people and shops of Kyoto. They’re chic and fashionable and the shops are trendy and cool. It was a completely different vibe than we got in Tokyo.

Nara & Ugenta
Even though Nara isn’t a city with a lot to do, we wanted to go there and spend a couple days relaxing. Nara is the former capital of Japan so there are several large shrines and temples, and what they are most famous for recently is their deer in Nara Park. Nara isn’t the most beautiful, so the park is a nice little oasis within a concrete city.

Tokyo
After a week on the west coast, AJ and I hopped on a 11.5 hour flight to Tokyo - a city rich with food, culture, and activities. I knew Tokyo was a big city, actually the largest city in the world, but I didn’t know what just how big it was.

Portland and Los Angeles
We did it. We officially left DC for our trip. It was an incredibly hectic couple of weeks trying to get the house together, but it all worked out in the end. We have an empty house and all of our things packed into just 4 bags. I left before AJ and while I was sad to say goodbye to the house for who knows how long, and nervous to leave it all behind, it was also an incredibly exciting and surreal experience.

Update from the road:
We've now been "retired" for almost a month, but had been so busy leading up to our trip that it didn't felt like we were not working. If anything, the days seem to somehow have gotten shorter, especially as we embarked on the first part of our journey to the West Coast and Japan (more on those soon).
